HARBOURSIDE COTTAGE Garlieston Wigtownshire Bay St Ninian's Cave Rigg Bay Galloway Forest

You are in Garlieston!!

Garlieston is an unspoilt gem of Georgian town planning re-developed in the late 18th century on the site of an earlier natural harbour by the 7th Earl of Garlies and named after him.  Galloway House and Gardens were built by his family and are situated in the woodland behind Harbouside and Slipway Cottages, accessed either on foot from the coastal path along Rigg Bay or by car taking the right turn immediately you enter Garlieston.

Later developments included a rail link to the south of England and the use of the harbour for the testing of the Mulberry Harbours which were recognised as vital tools in the eventual successful outcome of World War 2.

Garlieston is located in The Machars peninsula of Wigtownshire in Scotland’s most southerly county, Dumfries & Galloway, a region with an amazing coastline boasting truly unspoilt beaches; a landscape with hills, rivers, forests, lochs, castles and keeps; and an ancient history which has left a rich legacy of remains, many still awaiting to be unearthed.

Wildlife is left to flourish unharmed; seals around the isles, otters in the rivers; vast colonies of migrating birds in the bays; red kites have become a common sight.
